Let’s face it, when it comes to fly fishing, conversations about fishing salt are not likely to turn to the waters of the Persian Gulf region. But T&T pro-staff member, Martin James, has been working to change that.
The highly regarded host of his own BBC Radio program, accomplished writer and proud supporter of the Pendle Fishing Buddies Angling Club for youth, Martin made his first trip to Fujairah in the UAE in ’92. Never missing an opportunity to fly fish on any of his travels, he discovered a tremendous off-shore fishery (sailfish, bonito, bonefish, dorado, among others) and significant opportunity to promote the sport he loves in a part of the world that is largely unfamiliar with it.
Since then he’s made an annual pilgrimage back to run the Fujairah Fly Fishing Academy out of Le Méridien Al Aqah Beach Resort, located on the Gulf of Oman…and he’s gained the attention of UAE mainstream media along the way. As charismatic and passionate a character as Martin is, we’re not surprised in the least.
